  • Grimsby Old Jewish Cemetery, Doughty Road, Grimsby:

The cemetery opened in 1854 and closed following World War I. It then became a garden of rest. In 1959, it became a recreational park, the headstones being lifted and buried under turf. Accordingly there are no headstones remaining.

Consecrated - March 1896 - Currently still in use. Used by the Grimsby Hebrew Community. The site was bombed by the Germans in 1943 and most of the memorials (though not the headstones) were removed.The cemetery has also suffered from vandalism in recent years.Amongst those interred are five Jewish stowaways found dead in the hold of SS Ashton on route to Grimsby from Antwerp in 1908.Source: David Shulman, Webmaster JCR-UK [September 2016]
