The first Jewish immigrants arrived from Brazil in the 17th century after by the French conquest. In the early 1900s, Jews from Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt settled in Haiti, followed by Eastern Europe Jews in the 1930's. Steady emigration during the second half of the century continued. Most Jews live in Port-au-Prince. The Jews of Haiti have only an informal communal existence with religious services organized in a private home. [February 2003]
