Spotlight on International Members

Great Britain

The IAJGS board has decided to feature a new column entitled "Spotlight," which will feature new projects by our international members. This spotlight focuses on the JGS of Great Britain!

INDEXING OF UNITED SYNAGOGUE MARRIAGE AUTHORISATIONS

During the course of 2007 The Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain and the United Synagogue (which comprises 62 synagogues throughout Greater London) reached an agreement allowing the indexing of United Synagogue Marriage Authorisation documents, from 1880 up to and including 1907. These documents show the names of bride and groom with the date and place of marriage. The indexes will then be placed on a joint website page searchable database. This transcription process will take many, many months to complete. However It has recently been agreed with the United Synagogue that the first 3000 transcribed record indexes, 1880-1885 inclusive, will soon go on line with updates as additional years are completed. Once online,  there will be a link from the home page of the JGSGB website. These records are of great interest to UK Jewish genealogists, and they have not previously been easily available.
