Welcome to the Wonderful World of Philly Food

Philadelphia has become one of the premier destinations for Fine Dining on the east coast. Restaurant connoisseurs and "foodies" travel here for award winning gastronomic experiences.

Equally, if not more acclaimed, is Philly "street" Food:

Cheesesteak  -  beloved by the natives, who obviously do not observe kashrut or care about their cholesterol intake.  For those who must partake, the places to go are: Pat's Steaks, 9th St. and Passyunk Ave (open 24 hours); Gino's Steaks, 1219 S. 9th St, (open 24 hours) and Jim's Steaks, 400 South St.

Hoagie -  Sort of antipasto on a roll where you can make your own selections, within reason. Not hard to find; all the cheesesteak places and sandwich shops serve them. For the best, one might have to travel to Atlantic City or a Phillies game.

Soft Pretzels (with mustard) -  found everywhere

Water Ice - (Fat Free and Delicious!)  Rita's Water Ice - Suburban Train Station concourse, 1511 Spruce St, 239 South Street  (100 years ago South Street was the hub of Jewish immigrant life), Italiano's Water Ice 2551 S.12th Street (12th and Shunk Streets)

Highly recommended in the "Philly Food" category would be lunch at the Reading Terminal Market, an operating Farmers Market since 1892. There you will find food representing almost all of Philadelphia's ethnicities plus vegetarian and a variety of food from the Pennsylvania "Dutch" area in Lancaster county.  See the restaurant guide below (under Markets and Takeout) for contact instructions.

Restaurants and Other Places for Food

To help our conference visitors sort out the vast and complex Philadelphia restaurant scene we have called upon one of our members, who is himself an acclaimed restaurant owner, to provide a recommended list of dining choices based on convenience, location and quality.  This guide was put together for the attendees of the conference with their special needs in mind, and is not a complete guide of all Philadelphia restaurants.

We in Philadelphia are pleased to note that Zahav restaurant, which features Israeli cuisine, was ranked #1 in Philadelphia Magazine's recent rating of the city's 50 Best Restaurants.

Zahav is equally pleased to support the 2009 IAJGS conference. Opened in May 2008, Zahav is Philadelphia's only modern Israeli restaurant. In 2009, Chef/Owner Michael Solomonov was nominated for the James Beard Foundation's prestigious "Rising Star Chef" award. The restaurant has been featured frequently in national publications including Bon Appetit, Esquire, Food & Wine and Travel + Leisure"
