In 1832, the painter Eugène Delacroix accompanied a French mission in Morocco, set up to obtain a peace agreement from the Sultan after the conquest of Algeria. He was charmed by the country and its inhabitants. The interpreter of the French Consulate in Tangier, Abraham Benchimol, accompanied him during his stay. On February 21st, 1832, Delacroix attended a Jewish marriage which later became the inspiration for his painting “Noce juive dans le Maroc”, currently exhibited at the Louvre. Starting from literary and archival sources, we will evoke Tangier at the beginning of the 19th century, notably the small world of the European Consulates and will try to identify the bride and groom of the “Noce juive”.
