A movie directed by Céline MASSON and produced by the Studio Video of University Paris Diderot.
This documentary movie collects testimonies of several Ashkenazi Jewish families which tell the history of their change of name either changed by their parents or by themselves. The device of these conversations is the one of the intimacy, to let the persons speak beginning with a single proposal: " tell me the history of your name …"
"Very often this name identified them as Jews and to protect their children, they wished to "gallicize" it for a better integration and so that their children are as they had been victims of anti-Semitism, the shame and the rejection. We see in this movie, that the second generation wanted to return to its original nameand even more when it has been changed during adolescence. However a French jurisprudence does not allow people to recover their previous name since family names should be stable and that it is not acceptable to recover a foreign-sounding name.
Céline Masson will present her film.
