Galician (today Polish and Ukrainian) cadastral land records, property maps, school and voting records are valuable genealogical sources, especially when vital records are sparse or non-existent. Historical maps show exact locations of synagogues, cemeteries, schools, and market squares and often have the names of the landowners written onto the plots of land. Chart a family over several generations using the house or parcel numbers and land records can provide the valuation of properties and inheritance patterns. Voting records document the residents of a single dwelling, showing their ages and occupations. Often these unique records may be the only documented evidence of a family living in a particular town or village. Their history and relevance as an alternative source of genealogical and community information will be covered in this talk, as will details on how to obtain this type of record from overseas archives and how to create your own community projects using this data.
