Chelouche of Algeria: legend vs. reality

According to family tradition, Avraham Chelouche and his family emigrated in 1838 from Oran in Algeria to Eretz-Israel. The family settled in Jaffa, and Avraham’s son - Aharon Chelouche became one of the major figures of the city’s Jewish community. He was also one of the founders of Neve-Tezdek, the first Jewish neighborhood outside of Jaffa walls, established in 1887.
Information found recently in Montefiore census and other documents contested the correctness of the family legend that its origin is from Oran. The resulting debate triggered a genealogical research which revealed unknown Chelouche family roots in Algeria dating back to the late 18th century. DNA tests provided the missing link reconnecting the descendants of the Chelouche family in Israel and the descendants of the Schlouch family of Sidi-Bel-Abbès. The research was extended further to see if a relationship exists also with Shlouch families originating from Morocco.
