The conference presents an analysis of the different layers of names used in Eastern Europe during the last decades before the end of the Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires, namely: (1) sacred names (shemot ha-qodesh), (2) vernacular names (kinnuim), (3) names used for contacts with the Christians, and (4) hypocoristic forms. The peculiarity of this period consists in the restriction of onomastic creativity to layers (3) and (4).
