Simon Kanoui, member of an important and rich family in Oran and virtually life president of the Oran Consistory, was a complex and formidable figure not only in the Jewish community, but also in European political circles.

Here we will look into his life against the background of his extended family, his religious and cultural environment and, finally, his political activities, and in particular his involvement in election campaigns and the series of “anti-kanouist” crises. It was this latter aspect that played a significant role in the development of ‘anti-Judaism” during the late 19th century in Oran and the rest of Algeria.
