Find your Jewish ancestors in Poland

The lecture will present the double aim of the research: transmitting a family's story in Poland to the next generations, thus safeguarding its memory; and giving back an identity to the holocaust victims so that their descendants have some knowledge about who they were. This conference will analyze the methods used in the research. It will present the investigations conducted in Poland, both in archives and on site, and in various archives in Germany, Israel, France and America. It will also show the result of these investigations: a vivid picture of the lives of those who perished, and of the daily life in the shtetlekh (the Jewish villages) of Poland before the war, along with the individual stories of those who died and those who survived.
This innovative research was awarded by the Prix Mémoire de la Shoah (Memory of the Holocaust) in 2005. The book: Un Livre du souvenir, À la recherche d'une famille juive décimée en Pologne (A Memorial Book, In Search of a Jewish family decimated in Poland) presents the family history. A website extends the book: www.unlivredusouvenir.fr. It describes the methods used to carry out the research, gives the historical context for locating individual family stories in past times, and presents hundred of documents collected during years of investigation.
