Hundreds of Jewish communities scattered throughout the kingdom have lived in Morocco. These communities were formed during more than 2000 years of a turbulent history, that has witnessed the rise and fall of civilizations people and kingdoms. These communities which sometimes counted only a few families were isolated throughout many generations. These circumstances have created a complexes demographic situation, but also a process of crystallization of surnames according to regions, villages or towns.
The Jewish presence in this country is closely linked to its history. We find the evidence in the great variety of family names among the Jews of Morocco, which rises to more than 1400 names.
These names have many geographical and linguistic origins that have been formed under the influence of various events.
Thus, the study of family names of the Jews of Mogador / Essaouira (Morocco) was assembled using various sources. It is interesting not only from a purely onomastic point of view, but also because it allowed us to follow the path of certain migrations, as well as demographic and social changes within the city. In this research, we have collated all the surnames of the members of the Jewish community of Mogador since its foundation in 1764 until the end of its existence after the creation of the State of Israel.
