Filmmaker, Agnieszka Holland, whose film "In Darkness" was the official 2012 Foreign Language Oscar nominee for Poland this year, will discuss the universal dimension of Holocaust stories: how to achieve accuracy and authenticity – and avoid sentimentality – while still making an emotional impact on the audience. Using illustrative clips, she'll discuss European audiences' reactions to her latest film, set in the Lvov, Poland ghetto in 1943, where a Polish thief hides a group of Jewish refugees, as well as her earlier masterpiece, "Europa, Europa," based on the true story of a young German Jew who survived the Holocaust by falling in with the Nazis. She'll explore the challenges and complexities of portraying such diverse wartime stories and the changes in artistic interpretations of the Holocaust in the twenty year span between these two films.
