In June 2010, Rhoda Miller traveled to Lithuania and Belarus where she was able to reconstruct the lives and fate of family who did not emigrate from Vilnius. Previously unknown family members were “discovered” through the use of Lithuanian archival resources. The social history and environmental backdrop was critical to better learning and understanding of the experiences of her family living in Vilnius with roots in Svencionys, Utena, and Illuxt, Latvia. There was also a visit to Svencionys which included photographing the Jewish cemetery. In addition, she visited the shtetl of Orla, Belarus, birthplace of her grandmother. In Belarus, time was also spent in Zholudek and Lida. There will be a discussion of that experience including a visit to the Jewish cemetery and conversation with a 100 year old local resident. This program describes the research strategies utilized before, during, and after the trip as well as travel experiences.
