A short survey about the development of our script will offer a help for a better understanding of the many forms of the hand written letters. Their long lasting uniform outlook in the 19th century with many personal variations will be explained in detail. It is the time of a growing number of detailed genealogical sources, which provide examples for reading exercises. A deeper knowledge of these letter types will help to read the great mixture of styles written in the following decades.
