Jewish families from Krakow

In the first decades of the 20th century Krakow made home for about 65.000 Jews who constituted approximately 25% of the city’s population. Individual Jews as well as the entire Jewish families have played significant role in the development of the city. Especially since the second half of the 19th century, the Jews participated very actively in the process of city’s modernization - as investors, building contractors and architects, but also as politicians and members of local government and authorities, the activists in academic and cultural circles. Twentieth century Krakow has been also an important center of the Jewish religious life of Orthodox, Hasidic and Progressive Jews.
The presentation will cover the history and genealogy of several Jewish families of Krakow, and their impact both on the city and the local community (19-20th centuries).
