Comtat Venaissin

The name of a district and a medieval ritual bath are the only remainders of the existence of a Jewish community in the small city of Pernes les Fontaines(*).

Who were these Jews? How did they live?

What was their position among the other Jewish communities in the regions of the Comtat Venaissin and the South of France? When and why did they leave?

After a brief survey of 2000 years of Jewish presence in the Comtat Venaissin we will focus upon the history of the Jews of Pernes during the XVIth century.

They were at first compelled to live together in one and only street in 1504 and then expelled in 1569.

When and why did they leave?

Following a brief presentation about 2000 years of jewish presence in the Comtat Venaissin, we’ll look into the Jews of  Pernes’ story during the XVI th century: from they were under the obligation to gather together in only one street in 1504 to their expulsion in 1569.

(*) Small city in the South of France.
