Among Black Jews in France, whether converts or not, self-identification is built on identification with the White Jewish Other—a process where the quest of origins holds an important place. How does the search for actual or mythical Jewish roots factor into the dual process of Jewish self-identification and reconstruction of Black identity observable among them? This paper is drawn from a sociological fieldwork conducted among Black Jews—converts as well as natives of Ethiopian, Sephardic, or Ashkenazi descent, some of whom go public through the activities organized by the Fraternité Judéo-Noire (FJN, Black Jewish Brotherhood.)
