Lorraine

For about a century - from the 1720s to the 1820s - one clan is dominating in the Jewish community of Lorraine. Forming a dynasty of merchants of horses, suppliers of armies, and large dealers in luxury fabrics sought-after by the aristocracy, its members monopolize the duties of parnassim, get from the authorities special privileges, which place them above their co-religionists. Responsive to the ideals of the haskalah, they wear the aspirations of the Jews to equality that lead to the Decree of emancipation of September 27, 1791 and play a prominent role in the work of reorganization of French judaism carried out by Napoleon, even if, at the same time, they challenge its discriminatory measures. They are finally found in colleges of notables, dominating consistorial meetings until the end of the 1820s. How is this clan composed? Which marriage strategies has been implemented to strengthen this dominance? What roles family ties played in the political fights, led by men like Berr Isaac Berr? These are some of the issues to be covered in this Conference.
