This text deals with the terms of the choice of witnesses for marriage for a population covering the Jewish elites in the late 19th century in Paris. The corpus consists of 1539 marriages celebrated at the Synagogue e la Victoire between 1875 and 1914 for acts of religious and civil marriage have been stripped. For these 1539 marriages, more than 6000 witnesses have been considered. These marriages were distinguished according to the socio-economic level, so that the specificity of the behaviour of the elites can appear. Despite their limited number - two for each spouse - the witnesses to the marriage may serve as a barometer to measure severity of family and professional ties.
Recourse to the parents seems to be stable during the period, and women use them more often than men. Taking into account the socio-economic variable shows essentially that men of the most popular classes are less attached to the parent in the choice of their witnesses than the most preferred categories. The sectors that cover the liberal professions (medicine, legal) are the least attached to call a witness from relatives, as well as the professions related to the intellectual world. The two more attached to the parent categories are the public and the business sectors.
The border between liberal professions and business world can be observed when considering witnesses from the political world. Frequent at a 10% rate in the case of husbands exercising a liberal profession, they are little chosen by categories within the business world. It is the same with the "personalities", i.e. individuals who have reached a high hierarchical position in their sector of activity.
