The story of Jews in Scotland over the past two centuries and Scotland’s place on the emigration route from Eastern Europe to North America and elsewhere.
A wide variety of source material awaits those researching Scottish Jewish family history. This illustrated presentation examines the public records system in Scotland, which is one of the best in the world. Indexes of births, marriages and deaths in Scotland since 1855 are computerised. Census records for 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 are also indexed. Other public records include naturalisation records, city directories, valuation rolls, electoral registers, school admissions and passenger lists.
The Scottish Jewish Archives Centre in Glasgow houses Jewish community records, such as synagogue registers, cemetery lists, charity subscription records, organisational records, membership lists and personal papers. The Historical Database of Scottish Jewry collates records on over 38,000 Jews in Scotland.
