Italy has a very important role in Jewish history and genealogy. The Italian peninsula is located centrally on the Mediterranean sea and serves as an important crossroad and an intersection between North and South, East and West. That is Palestine, the Sephardic and the Ashkenazi worlds.

The lecture will give a short sketch of the origin and the composition of the Italian Jewish population: the arrivals of the Jews from abroad (France, Germany,Spain and Portugal) were later shaped by social and political circumstances: internal migrations, expulsions from the South of Italy, the closures in the Ghettos.

These are the starting points for the genealogists because the first standard resources for Jewish genealogy in Italy are available for the period when these events happened (the 15th - 17th century).

The more recent and contemporary resources testify the presence of French, Iberian and Ashkenazi clusters in the Italian Jewish communities: the lecture will show the composition of the Jewish population drawn out from the lists of surnames available for Sicily (arrivals from Spain and Africa), Piedmont (arrivals from France), Tuscany (arrivals from Spain and Portugal), Venezia and Genova.
