Doreen Carvajal explores the process of recovering her Catholic family's secret Sephardic Jewish roots dating back to the Spanish Inquisition.
Carvajal moved to a historic white pueblo on the southern frontier of Andalusia to understand why generations of her family left Spain and spread across Latin America. She explored the archeology of memory to find her family's story: decoding rituals, DNA, music, art, poetry and cuisine to understand the desperate messages left behind by Jews forced to convert. Her book, "The Forgetting River: A Modern Tale of Identity, Survival, and the Inquisition," will be published by Riverhead Press in New York in August.
