My grandfather, Samuel Rothschild, was orphaned at an early age and did not know anything about his family when I asked him. All he knew was his birth place and his birth date, but not the names of his parents. Since he was born in the USA, through various means such as Federal Censuses, naturalization papers, city directories, newspapers and newspaper obituaries, I was able to find out that Samuel's father, Abraham Rothschild, came from "Bavaria" and was born on 28 July 1828. But where? Bavaria is a huge place! Having exhausted all the resources available to me in the USA, I switched my research energies over to the CAHJP, the Central Archives of the History of the Jewish People, in Jerusalem. Taking the search for Abraham Rothschild's birth place as an example, this lecture will describe the wide and sometimes eclectic resources available at the CAHJP, how to use them, what information can be gleaned from them, and what pitfalls to avoid.
