After a brief review of main historical events relating to the Jewish community of Salonica,  such as the transfer from the Ottoman Empire to Greece in 1912, the great fire of 1917 and the massive deportations in 1943, I will delve into the problem of identifying sources of genealogical research, which, strangely, are to be found mainly outside Greece.

Several paths should be explored, either in the Paris archives or those in Jerusalem, or even on Internet. Newspapers published in Salonica in the late 19th and early 20th centuries offer advertisements of Jewish shops and products, or wedding and death notices. These provide valuable information about Jewish family and contemporary customs in that city. A list of first names traditionally given to new-borns will be presented along with their conventional equivalents.  Finally, I will identify several publications as well as family websites that can further your research.
