Renée Dray-Bensousan is interested in the fate of the Jews in Marseilles during 1938-1945 period. Thousands of German and Austrian Jews took refuge first in Marseille, and many are jailed as German citizens as early as 1939. Exodus of 1940 causes massive arrivals of French, Belgian, Dutch Jewish refugees. Marseilles is a refugee city. But as early as 1942, this refuge turns into a trap when Vichy gives Nazi foreign Jews first, and then French. The Gurs and Milles camps get empty to Drancy internment and deportation. The speaker evokes rescue organizations, Emigration Association (HICEM), unavoidable association , and New York's Anti-fascist Committee, and quotes the name of Varian Fry, American savior, who managed to evacuate many intellectuals Jews from Marseilles.
