Slovakia

Besides earlier settlements and the Schutzjuden most of the Jews in Western Slovakia were descendants of those who came from Bohemia and Moravia, forced to leave there because of the Familiantengesetz. Three to four generations of big families caused more movement.  Parts of families moved to other districts of Hungary. Then the industrial revolution caused opportunities in the towns an the urbanism boosted. Some migration to the new world took already place.

Most genealogy is based on individual registration of data. Some census are very helpful to get the family in the picture. But, it is still difficult to find siblings and the relation between families, as the same surname is no enough proof of relation. In this presentation Frank will show some interesting sources and will do an appeal to cooperate in disclosing hidden documents in archives and more still unknown sources. This short presentation is meant to be of practical use to for genealogical search in Western Slovakia. It is mostly based on experience and not an scientific exposé. It is also an invitation to other researchers to share their experience.
