Before data appear in a modern form, many bits of information have to be searched in diverse sources. The more we go back into the past, the more sorts of documents can be found. Examples for many of them in Germany will be given. When work in the archives is finished, the findings have to be harmonized to the simple final form of names plus dates. Mistakes in the sources, peculiar handwriting, characteristics of Jewish name giving, errors by the researchers can produce many faults. The speaker, who works at all the stages of this process, will give hints to overcome these problems and to recognize possible mistakes. Special emphasis will be laid upon the names, since they cause the greatest trouble. The talk shall offer help that is useful for researchers in archives as well as for genealogists who work at home with published data.
