Town-based Indexing of the Unindexed fields in the Ellis Island Database

The Ellis Island Database (EIDB) provides a searchable index of immigrants arriving via passenger ship at Ellis Island (New York) from 1892 through 1924.
When the database was created, two important sets of data on the passenger ship manifests were NOT indexed: person and address at destination and person left behind in the old country. Analyzing the names and addresses of people left behind and people at the destination enables us to identify and relate family groups that have different surnames. JewishGen Ukraine SIG has begun indexing these two fields, using town-based extractions from the EIDB. This presentation uses the re-indexing projects that the Kremenets District Research Group has completed for two towns in western Ukraine, Shumsk and Vishnevets. Our presentation describes (1) the difficulties encountered in selecting town-based records and how those difficulties were overcome, (2) the process used to select Jewish records from the database, and (3) the surprising results we were able to obtain and how those results can be used for Jewish family history research. Ukraine SIG now is extending these re-indexing projects to other key Ukraine towns.
